Accommodation The Melbourne Campus does not have its own on-site student accommodation, but there are several housing and accommodation options available in close proximity to us. Students can choose to share and/or rent an apartment, flat or house, or stay in student apartment complexes or hostels, or live with an Australian family in a Homestay. For more information about accommodation, contact the Student Support Unit by email [ssu@meg.edu.au]”
Student Apartment Accommodation Student Housing Australia manages purpose built student apartment complexes which offer affordable, secure and quality accommodation designed specifically for International Students. Many apartments are centrally located in the CBD and are in very close proximity to MEG All rental costs include your furniture, cutlery and crockery, gas and water. Most apartments have private bathroom and toilet facilities. Flexible leasing options are offered, 6 months or 12 months with one, two or three bedroom apartments available. Further information and application forms can be downloaded from their website - www.s-h-a.com.au
Temporary Accommodation New international students often prefer to stay in temporary accommodation when they first arrive in Melbourne. This allows time to become familiar with the city and to find suitable and convenient permanent accommodation. Temporary accommodation can be arranged by us before you arrive in Melbourne. The places listed below offer a range of inexpensive accommodation choices close to us. You pay for your temporary accommodation when you arrive (unless stated otherwise). The Elephant Backpacker - City Centre Budget Accommodation The Greenhouse Backpacker & The Friendly Backpacker The Melbourne Connection Traveller's Hostel Victoria Hall
Permanent Accommodation Most of our students (Australian and international) choose one of these options (costs are an indication only): 1. Rent or share an apartment, flat or house for 12 months. Costs include rent, food, telephone calls, gas, and/or electricity. You may need to buy furniture and other household goods. A bond will usually be paid before you move in. When you share a flat, apartment or house everyone shares the kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living rooms. You have your own bedroom. 2. Live in a private hostel where you will have your own furnished bedroom, and share bathroom and living areas. Some hostels provide meals and others provide kitchen facilities. Computer facilities may be available. 3. Live with an Australian family (Homestay) and you will have your own bedroom and share living spaces with your Homestay family. Meals are included but you will pay for your telephone calls and travel expenses. English language students can arrange Homestay before arrival. Other students arrange Homestay after arrival.
Self Contained Student Apartment Complexes While allowing students to live independently, these large complexes also provide student facilities and services resulting in a secure and supportive residential environment. Most complexes have a management team and 24 hour on-site security. For more information and a list of venues contact a Student Support Officer by email [christine@meg.edu.au]
Private Hostels/Residential Halls This type of accommodation is a popular option for country, interstate and international students. A furnished bedroom is provided, with access to shared bathrooms, living and recreational areas. Some hostels provide meals while others provide share kitchen facilities for self-catering. Some hostels also provide meals and others are self catering. For more information and a list of venues contact a Student Support Officer by email [christine@meg.edu.au]
Private Board and Homestay If this is your first experience of living away from home, you may find life much easier if you don't have to adjust to independent living when you first arrive. Homestay or full-board accommodation is usually provided in a suburban household with your own fully furnished room, 2 - 3 meals per day and all household bills except telephone calls included in the overall cost of approximately $200-$230 per week. A Private Homestay Consultant can arrange a placement for you. The placement fee is usually around $100. For more information and a list of Private Homestay Consultants contact a Student Support Officer by email [christine@meg.edu.au]
Renting Renting your own apartment or house through a Real Estate Agent or private landlord offers students privacy and independence. Most rental properties are unfurnished so initial setting up costs would have to include furniture & appliances. For more information renting contact a Student Support Officer by email [christine@meg.edu.au]
Shared House Accommodation Moving into an established household that has a vacant bedroom is often an easier and less costly option than leasing a vacant house or flat. You will pay rent for your own bedroom and share the bathroom, kitchen and living areas with the other people living in the household.
