Student Welfare Student support services are available to ensure our students have the educational, emotional and physical support they need over the period of their involvement with Melbourne Education Group. Students can occasionally experience difficulty with internal or external influences that may impact on them completing their qualifications. In these circumstance they are encouraged to access the confidential services offered by us. Student Support Officers are available as the first point of contact to discuss any issues you may have. If you require more intensive counselling services students can access up to three sessions with a trained counsellor from the University of Melbourne. Information relating to these services and referral applications can be obtained from the Student Support Unit. Adjusting to Melbourne When you arrive in Melbourne expect to feel both excited and a little frustrated about your new surrounding and the ways of Australian people. You will go through a number of phases as you adjust. Feeling a little nervous, anxious or lonely when arriving in a new country is normal. If this occurs you are experiencing a normal reaction to an abnormal event - being away from home. Feel free to contact the Student Support Unit to talk to one of the officers who are trained to help you adjust to your new surroundings. VISA Requirements Your student visa has mandatory conditions that are set by Australian law and cannot be changed or disregarded. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship may cancel your visa if you break any of these conditions. The Student Support Unit are here to assist you successfully complete your studies and will support you through them. However, we also have legal obligations to DIAC and must report such circumstances as non-attendance or poor academic progression. Grievances and Complaints Melbourne Education Group has in place formal grievance procedures designed to assist students who feel they have been treated unfairly. The grievance procedures ensure that student concerns are addressed and resolved at the earliest possible opportunity to avoid the escalation of problems. All policies and procedures are outlined extensively on the MEG website and in the student diary. Pastoral Care Melbourne Education Group recognises the importance of the spiritual dimension to human life and its value in building a caring community of students and staff and enriching the quality of life for all. Students have access to a Multi Denominational Prayer Room available during semester operating hours. Washing facilities are located in the toilet areas for use by Muslim students. Other pastoral, theological (visiting religious representatives) and recreational activities will be advertised in the Student Lounge area. Referral Services The Student Support Unit offers students advice and referral to a number of external services that can provide professional confidential assistance to them. These services include financial counselling and assistance, medical and dental practitioners, legal advice, accommodation options, health and nutrition consultations.
